I can't believe I'm in grad school

Well since this is my blog for week one, I think I just want to introduce myself and basically explain my reasons for choosing IMC as my graduate program.

My name is Katherine (preferred to be called Katie) and I recently graduated from WVU in August with a B.S in Journalism and concentration in Advertising. I couldn't believe I was done my undergrad and I was ready to pick up and move to a big city and work for a big advertising firm when I realized (after applying to hundreds of places) that I had little to no experience. This really upset me because I was ready to work and have a career. Then my adviser told me about IMC and how it incorporates advertising, marketing (including direct marketing) and basically how to get and maintain good relationships with consumers and clients. I figured this was my best bet considering I already had the creative aspect from all of my advertising courses, now I needed a business mindset and I figured IMC was perfect for that.

So far, it's been going pretty well although I have to repeat 616 (due to some heartbreaking circumstances that I don't really want to get into). But before I had any problems, I did enjoy 616 a lot and 610 was very interesting for just a basic class. I do hope IMC can open my eyes to different forms of marketing considering a lot of old means of marketing are just that -- old. Like our week two question asks, "what mediums will become obsolete?" And I personally think newspapers are just done for. People can access newspapers online with color and interactive advertising, larger classifieds and articles and breaking news more quickly. Why would anyone want to continue to struggle with newspapers when they can access them on the Internet. I personally think it's sad they're going away but it justt needs to be done since now we're focusing on environmental issues and paper is just being wasted.

I definitely look forward to posting more on here, it's hard to now because it is just the first week but my posts will get more interesting.

Talk to you later,
Katie
